AS in Liberal Studies from Saint Leo University

Degree Description: Saint Leo University offers students a degree program that is ideally designed for those who want to pursue higher education, but are unaware of what specific field or industry they want a career in. This degree program is generally broad, laying the basic foundation for critical and independent thinking. Since the university is affiliated with the Catholic religion, in addition to taking 48 credit hours of general education requirements such as English, college mathematics, and physical science, it’s also mandated that students take a 3-credit course about the Christian faith. To earn a degree in liberal studies specifically, students must take a minimum of 33 credit hours of major courses, such as foundations of modern social science and critical thinking in liberal studies. Students are also required to take a minimum of 36 credit hours of electives. In total, students must earn 120 credits to earn this degree. This degree should take full-time students about two to three years to earn. The cost of tuition, including food, room and board, is typically $31,855 per year. Many students are also eligible for financial aid, which can help reduce tuition costs.

Degree Outlook: While some argue that a liberal studies degree is too general and that it makes job searches difficult, that is untrue. In fact, gradates have a broad-base of knowledge, which enables them to find employment at a variety of different industries and organizations. While additional training and education may be required to pursue careers in some of these fields, liberal art studies graduates typically find careers in communications, advertising, marketing and teaching. Most also use their degrees as a foundation to go back to school and become lawyers. Since career options are theoretically endless, it’s impossible to pinpoint the exact job outlook for liberal art graduates. But market research analyst positions are expected to grow by 28 percent, creating 70,100 new jobs within the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Communications and public relation jobs are expected to grow by 24 percent, providing 66,200 new jobs. And jobs in urban and regional planning are expected to grow by 19 percent and establish 7,300 new openings.
