Yale’s Foray into Online Degrees
Ivy League schools were surprisingly some of the first schools to try out the online education community. While they originally offered only open online classes, these schools were many of the first traditional schools to offer online degree programs to distance learning students and have inevitably lowered the price of these courses. Yale has long been one of the top ranked Ivy League schools in the nation and one of the most prestigious in the world: the name alone sends visions of moss-colored buildings and New England style libraries from the eighteenth century. However, Yale has now become associated with the online community and has taken on a new vision for future students: one of hope.
Yale as long prided itself on its selective admissions policies, and has thus reigned supreme in its collections of exclusive societies, awards, and future career opportunities. However, while the traditional schools and its degree programs have remain unchanged over the years, the school has managed to evolve along with the rest of the world and jumped onto the online education bandwagon, much to its benefit. Most traditional schools like Yale that have begun to offer online degrees have managed to boost their enrollment due to the expansive distance learning communities. Even more than that, students now have the opportunity to earn a degree from Yale by taking classes through their computers. I’m sure the original founders of Yale never foresaw this moment occurring hundreds of years ago, but Yale has proved to the education community that it is able to advance with the times, and is not simply a stoic rock in Connecticut.
Many outsiders of the online education industry picture online degrees more like the “diploma mill” scandal, and are unaware that schools such as Yale offer online degrees as well. However, this is far from true, and Yale is a standing contradiction to this idea. University of Phoenix is not the only school out there (although their ads would make you think so), but in fact there are dozens of online colleges, which increase yearly. Regardless of previous notions of online education, it has developed into a lucrative industry that has enraptured much of the nation. The inclusion of schools such as Yale should prove to most outsiders that this is not merely a passing trend, but a new alternative for students around the world.
