Ivy League schools were surprisingly some of the first schools to try out the online education community. While they originally offered only open online classes, these schools were many of the first traditional schools to offer online degree programs to distance learning students and have inevitably lowered the price of these courses. Yale has long been one of the top ranked Ivy League schools in the nation and one of the most prestigious in the world: the name alone sends visions of moss-colored buildings and New England style libraries from the eighteenth century. However, Yale has now become associated with the online community and has taken on a new vision for future students: one of hope.

Yale as long prided itself on its selective admissions policies, and has thus reigned supreme in its collections of exclusive societies, awards, and future career opportunities. However, while the traditional schools and its degree programs have remain unchanged over the years, the school has managed to evolve along with the rest of the world and jumped onto the online education bandwagon, much to its benefit. Most traditional schools like Yale that have begun to offer online degrees have managed to boost their enrollment due to the expansive distance learning communities. Even more than that, students now have the opportunity to earn a degree from Yale by taking classes through their computers. I’m sure the original founders of Yale never foresaw this moment occurring hundreds of years ago, but Yale has proved to the education community that it is able to advance with the times, and is not simply a stoic rock in Connecticut.

Many outsiders of the online education industry picture online degrees more like the “diploma mill” scandal, and are unaware that schools such as Yale offer online degrees as well. However, this is far from true, and Yale is a standing contradiction to this idea. University of Phoenix is not the only school out there (although their ads would make you think so), but in fact there are dozens of online colleges, which increase yearly. Regardless of previous notions of online education, it has developed into a lucrative industry that has enraptured much of the nation. The inclusion of schools such as Yale should prove to most outsiders that this is not merely a passing trend, but a new alternative for students around the world.

Botany is a pretty specialized degree choice that many students do not consider as a viable future career choice. However, this realm of science has produced much advancement in the structure of plant life and has helped research into little known species of plants, as well as has revealed insight into the development of so many different types of plants. While many Ph.D. students go on to become professors, there are many other students who contribute to the ever-increasing advancements in their research of the plant world, devoting their life to the study of this discipline. The best botany schools for graduate education have produced students who have made drastic developments in the field, although this niche in the science field is ever-expanding as many programs are more micro-biology than simply catering to botany.

Most state schools offer programs in botany for undergraduate studies, encouraging a deeper foray into the biology realm of science in order to better equip students for the study of plant development. California and Texas are two states which have large public state schools that offer advanced degrees in botany, better preparing students for a future career in research. Learning at a large state school may seem intimidating, but is important for a career in the sciences because it allows students to work in an environment that has many research opportunities as well as world-class laboratories. Furthermore, these larger schools have the potential to breed larger programs in the field of botany in the coming years.

While the University of Texas at Austin does not offer a Ph.D. program specifically in botany, it offers the equivalent through its plant biology program. This program offers students the opportunity to earn a degree within a school that has an international reputation for its teaching of plant sciences and allows students to be taught by a myriad of faculty who are experienced in different realms of the plant world. Similarly, the University of California – Berkeley, offers a Ph.D. degree in plant biology, which emphasizes a study of plants at the biochemical, cellular, or molecular level, as well as stresses a deeper understanding of plant genetics.

While the botany graduate degree is one which is difficult for many students to place, and typically involves an overarching degree in microbiology or a similar field, the possibilities in the botany world are nearly endless. New discoveries are made every year in regards to new species of plants, indicating that we have only tapped the surface in our understanding of the plant world. Advanced degrees in this realm of science helps all of us in the science expand the knowledge to ordinary people around the world, knowledge that can be vastly beneficial in fields from health to genetics. While botany is still a degree that is slowly coming to fruition in its ability to retain its own area of study, botanists around the world can tell you that it is an important degree for the advancement of a very specified niche of science. Therefore, the need for even more graduate programs in botany around the country has increased in recent years solely so schools can produce students who graduate with the specific knowledge of plant evolution and life.

Harvard University online has become the slogan of many distance learning students who have now had the opportunity to attend the prestigious school. This New England school has been held in high regard for nearly four hundred years, and would seem to be one school which would not be eager to incorporate online classes into its repertoire. However, Harvard, Yale, and MIT were some of the first schools to offer online classes through their open courses, which thus expanded into full degree programs in selective subjects. Harvard is a dream for so many students, and the fact that it is now offered online has allowed many of these students to fulfill lifelong dreams by earning a degree from Harvard.

Much different than other online colleges, Harvard has centuries of lineage behind it and the added prestige of being the first university in the United States. Harvard helped prove to the colonists that they were able to meet England’s idea of society and additionally that they were able to function as their own entity, separate and apart from Cambridge and Oxford. Since this point in history, Harvard has continued to impress the world with its revolutionary research methods, scholastic opportunities, and its students. Because Harvard crept slowly into the online industry, more people have considered online education to be more reputable than it otherwise would have seemed.

While Harvard is far from offering the extensive degree programs that University of Phoenix or Kaplan University offer to their students, the fact that it is now available to distance learning students is revolutionary in itself. Imagining the old brick university of 1636 as one of the first schools to offer online courses is quite a feat in itself, and Harvard has managed to overcome all odds and continue to be one of the leading forums in education. Students from California can now attend Harvard classes without the cross-country move, thus saving thousands of dollars in the overall move and hundreds of dollars in the cost of classes. It is amazing what technology has now allowed us to do, and Harvard has helped prove to all of us that online education does not need to be confined to for-profit institutions, but can be implemented in Ivy League schools as well.

Harvard University online classes are still a work in progress, but the school continues to offer open classes, which serve to influence potential students to attend the school. Open classes were the best source for traditional schools to attract new students because they allow anybody to view previous course lectures and notes without suffering the cost of enrollment. Harvard updates its open course offerings every year and continues to update its degree programs as well, becoming a new face in the online world.

We all know the high levels of acclaim that are given to graduates of Ivy League universities, so it is no surprise that students are now vying for the chance to enroll in online degree programs at these very same institutions. While this is an ongoing process (many Ivy League schools only offer limited courses rather than full degree programs online), students have remained enthusiastic about the prospect of earning an online BA from Harvard or Yale without relocating to New England. The benefits are nearly endless for this type of degree which is so close in our future!

Columbia is one school that currently offers students the opportunity to earn an engineering degree via online classes. While it offers a multitude of other courses that can contribute to a BA, currently there are limited options for a full degree program in the arts. Harvard offers many students similar options as Columbia; while there are no full degree programs that are offered through its distance learning program, the school still offers many different courses without the full degree.

Earning a BA online from an Ivy League school is one such hope for many online students who want to put this on their resume. Thus far, however, it still remains in the future as many Ivy League universities are hesitant to offer an entire bachelor’s program through the internet. Dartmouth is another school which offers limited online enrollment through its Tuck Business Bridge Program that allows its liberal arts graduates to gain “total immersion” into business programs. While this type of program is only available for professionals hoping for a better understanding of the business world, it is a sign that Dartmouth at least is on the way to offering a full degree program online. Yale is one school that surprisingly has yet to offer a BA through its online course listings. This Connecticut Ivy League school was one of the first to jump on the distance learning bandwagon, and even offers “open courses” (free courses) to students around the country who wish to gain a deeper understanding of a specific subject. However, the school has not yet offered any degree programs online and seems stuck in its offerings from years ago, rather than offering new courses with each semester.

We have yet to truly appreciate the offerings Ivy League schools have to give us, but as the years pass, we can only hope that they let down their walls and allow online education in. Earning a BA from an Ivy League university is an acclaimed feat for any person, and allowing degrees to be offered to students across the country will be an even larger feat for the university to accomplish, not to mention the joy it would bring thousands of students.

Social media has swept the world ever since the first days of Facebook and MySpace. Since this point, we have witnessed social media sites come and go, and have additionally witnessed the huge revolution that has taken place as sites like Twitter have become a “go-to” spot for international news and a hub for oppressed citizens to voice the cruelty of their situations to the world. Along with these sites has become the increased prominence of blog sites around the internet. Blogs have been around for over a decade, but recently gained notoriety after journalists and politicians began to use them as a forum for their own political views and musings. Since this point, ordinary citizens have begun to use blogs as a way to grow closer to their followers and simply to have a place to have their own creative space. Different from a diary, the blog allows users to publicly discuss their day, the weather, their hobbies, or their political views. More recently, online colleges have begun to develop blog sites in an effort to attract more students because of this “closeness” that social media sites create.

Blog sites for online colleges typically revolve around the easy adaptability to online education, the cost efficient tuition fees, easy schedules, and degree programs. For future students of online universities, these blogs help them make the difficult decision whether or not to earn an online degree. Blogs enlarge a bond with the reader, due to the closeness which social media sites have developed with their users. Twitter is the best example of this, due to the many celebrities who constantly update, and their many followers who feel like they have a secret insight into their lives. Blogs work on the same system, although they can have longer updates and are not confined to 140 characters. Online college blogs appeal to many visitors of online college sites and are vital to the existence of the school.

Many blogs post frequent updates to engage the reader, and with the ever increasing sources of news in online education, blogs have a lot to comment on. Online college blogs can comment on the bad reputation that many online colleges receive and how they serve to rebut these beliefs through their outstanding programs and faculty. The possibilities are nearly endless for college blogs and can span a variety of subjects, although these blogs are more carefully honed into the interests of students. Developing this type of blog may be difficult, since social media has transformed the way many of us read articles. Blogs cannot be too long, but instead have to pull the reader in with sensationalized headlines (much like the early days of newspapers), and carefully broken up paragraphs. Blogs are part of the wave of the future, and go hand in hand with the advancement of online education.
